BREW is an application development platform created by Qualcomm for mobile phones. It was originally developed for CDMA handsets, but has since been ported to other air interfaces including GSM/GPRS, and UMTS. Standing for Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless, it is a software platform that can download and run small programs for download rich media contents, playing games, sending messages, sharing photos, etc. The main advantage of BREW platform is that the application developers can easily port their applications between all the Qualcomm ASICs. The BREW runs between the application and the wireless device’s chip operating system so as to enable a programmer to develop applications without needing to code for system interface or understand wireless applications. It debuted in September 2001.

The BREW solution supports today’s business and technology requirements for rapid deployment of wireless data applications services. The BREW solution is hardware independent, open to extension by third parties and consistently deployable on any network and on virtually any mobile telephony device, including smartphones and PDA’s. The BREW solution consists of an application execution environment (the BREW client) that runs on top of the device chipset System (BDS).
